Every time I see how many calories I've burned in a run, I think to myself "nice, that's a smash burger and fries this weekend"

Secondarily, never let the fact that you've got a wife and kids stop you from staying active and having a great time. If you're a great husband and father you'll incorporate your family into the fun. Get that running stroller, hike the Dolomites with your family, order your toddler a NA piña colada so they're having fun poolside with the adults.

A great read and happy to see someone being willing to serve as a lightning rod on the issue. I like the idea of a Huberman/life hacker bro-style ethos, but for mild degenerates. On cigars, I have a deeply pseudoscientific theory that they are a much neglected corner of a centuries old and proven alcohol-caffeine-nicotine synergy (one we would forget at our peril).

My thoughts exactly. No sense in training hard if you can’t enjoy yourself

Really appreciated this article, man. This found me at a pivotal time in my fitness where I've kind of weened myself off tracking every single thing. For about a year now, I've tracked every calorie, taking body measurements every week, weighed myself every morning, and recorded training volumes for every lift. It was much needed, because I had no discipline in doing things prior, but I've definitely internalized this process and it is time to let go. I don't need an excel spreadsheet anymore and I don't have to wear my Garmin for every workout. I know how to eat well and I know how to work out, I just gotta trust myself so I can get some time and headspace back!

Fucking LOVE this. Also to consider… there are seasons of your life. Natural ebbs and flows where things go up and down. Your life is an ocean and going nuts about trying to keep the ocean wave free is a fruitless endeavor. Have your habits and ideals and ride the wave.

This is something I’ve been thinking about a ton recently! I saw a (probably funny on purpose) meme about the horseshoe theory of health, and it explained one end was healthy for the body (the berries and steak you mentioned) the other had cigarettes, zero-cal energy drinks, etc and that they’re healthy for being human (I refer to that as healthy for the soul). Super interesting to delve into this thought deeper, as I enjoy my cigarillos around a fire with the guys and am simultaneously working towards my first half-marathon over the summer.
