Almost Epic
You’ve got to give it to BMW for going all-in on such a car. Development began in the early 80s and they dumped ONE BILLION of today’s dollars into it.
And then it kind of flopped.
What they ended up with was a really sexy car, a bunch of firsts, and unfortunately a bunch of underwhelmed automotive journalists.
Fun Facts:
First BMW designed with CAD
$1B in today’s dollars invested in development
Had lowest drag coefficient (slippery) of any BMW
One of the first throttle-by-wire cars on the road
First 6-speed mated to V12
This was always meant to be a GT car rather than a sports car, but unfortunately, it came out a bit lifeless.
You had the the 850i, 850Ci, and the big boi 850CSi which rocked a higher tuned V12.
CSi V12 Motor Specs:
5.6 L V12 (Runs as 2 independent straight 6 cylinders)
375 hp
406 lb/ft
The 8-Series weighed nearly as much as the 750IL 4 door sedan, which meant all that power still only equated to 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. And that was that fast one.
One thing I thought was super interesting was despite this being such a massive endeavor and flagship car, they never officially put on M badge on the peak version of this car, the 850CSi, BUT some CSis had “M8” on the title.
It’s like internally they knew it was the thing but maybe it didn’t make sense marketing-wise? I feel like it would have been a bigger hit with the M badge.
Hagerty did a great video on this car last week. Would recommend.
Better Than I Expected
I was watching an Andrew Robinson review and noticed his super clean setup used an Apple TV. It piqued my interested—The guy was rocking a lean but top-tier setup: High-end Bowers & Wilkins speakers, McIntosh components, monster tv… and an Apple TV.
I figured it must be meaningful if he felt compelled to have that in the setup.
So I dug in, and I came out with an Apple TV.
I have an LG OLED TV that I love. It’s sleek, has a great sound system, and incredible picture quality. But I never liked the UX much. It connects to all my apps, but it’s a bit laggy and ugly and seems kind of like an afterthought.
I just thought that’s how things were gonna be. Never thought much about it again.
Enter: Apple TV
My TV experience has changed.
Whereas most TVs are really tuned for showcasing a great video quality with all the other stuff coming next (including the processor), The Apple TV has its own processor, the A15 Bionic, which is in the iPhone 13 Pro!
It’s a beast.
And more powerful than a TV’s processor.
This equates to the classic Apple silky-smooth, no lag experience on your TV.
UX is intuitive and very Apple. If you have an iPhone, you’ll instantly be able to pick up the controller and run with it.
Speaking of: The remote is small and clever AND ALUMINUM, which is way cooler than the big, clunky plastic LG remote. Feels premium.
Overall, it’s just a better experience.
I’m years late to this party, but I’m a big fan.

The Joy of Booking in Advance
I recently booked a trip that I’ll be doing in a few months, and I’m so excited. I’ll be in Mexico City for a spell, then hopping down to the coast to surf in Puerto Escondido, then back to Mexico City.
I’ve heard Tim Ferriss talk about this several times—the joy of booking a trip well in advance.
He talks about how you get double the joy: You get the excitement of dreaming of the fun trip to come… and you get the trip itself.
I think there is another bonus in booking long ahead: It ends up feeling like a free trip.
Airfare and lodging are the most expensive part of this particular trip. After a few months, you’ve long forgotten about paying for al that, and it kinda feels like a nice little gift from your past self. He really hooked it up.

p.s. Are you subscribed to my YouTube Channel where I go in depth on all of this kind of stuff??? You should be.
p.p.s. Some of these links toss me a commission without costing you any extra. This goes to buying more things so I can talk about them.
Cheers!

Such a unique looking car to this day. Never been a fan of BMW's, but I always appreciate their simple luxurious interiors that are just so chill be in. Enjoy your trip to Mexico! Been wanting to go down there forever since I got familia down in Jalisco. I've only ever booked out a trip a year out once and yeah you're right it feels pretty darn good.
Dang I really needed that quote.. Thanks for the great post!
Dude! Enjoy your trip to Mexico City. I lived there for two years and miss it every day! Let us know where you're staying. Don't believe everything you read online about it either. My favorite parts of the city are to the north in the working-class neighborhoods. I've never had a bad meal in those parts. Amazing place.
